Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor

The Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor is one of the main connections in the northeast quadrant of the peninsula, since it connects the ports of general interest of the Valencian Community (Port Authorities of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante) with the eastern ports of the Cantabrian Sea (Pasajes, Bilbao and Santander), through Zaragoza and the Ebro Valley as major engines of activity in that region.

In this sense, Zaragoza is a logistic and infrastructural node of great relevance in this northeastern quadrant of the peninsula, since it is located at the crossroads of these two main corridors and equidistant by road and rail from the main connecting hubs: Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid and Valencia.

Zaragoza’s centrality in the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor and, consequently, the equidistance of this point to any of the main freight attracting or generating centers should be emphasized. This means, for example, that both Zaragoza and the Ebro Valley and the Cantabrian coast are part of the area of land influence or hinterland of all these ports, and import or export flows can be served from any of them.

This Corridor is integrated within the TEN-T network and is conceived as a line that connects the most important railway nodes of the Northeast network of the Iberian Peninsula, an important socio-economic area in Spain, which concentrates more than a quarter of the country’s population and represents more than 25% of the GDP. For this reason, due to the high industrial presence and the fact that there are six ports of international importance (Valencia, Sagunto, Castellón, Bilbao, Pasajes and Santander), the potential for rail traffic in this rail corridor is very high.

Expected Benefits

Overall improvement in operating capacity and flexibility, increased quality of service and greater safety, reliability and comfort,

Adequacy of the accesses to the large logistic nodes, as well as to other smaller nodes in their area of influence, to guarantee the capacity and efficiency of all operations related to the Corridor.

Economic Development: the project is expected to boost economic development in the affected regions, attracting investment and creating jobs.
