Project summary:

The PIRENE IV project is a continuation of the PIRENE III project developed within the framework of the INTERREG III B SUDOE program. It is an initiative taken by Spanish, French and Portuguese regions whose main objective is to carry out a series of activities to accelerate the implementation of an efficient rail network throughout Southwest Europe, capable of solving the current traffic saturation problems.

Project summary:

The Canfraneus II project is a continuation of the Canfraneus I project. Its dual purpose has allowed, on the one hand, to deepen the study on the reciprocal safety of international rail and road tunnels, as well as their operating conditions, and on the other hand, to identify the strengths of the line to enhance the use of trains for passengers and freight.

Connecting Europe Facility 2016

In the framework of the 2016 call of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the European Commission Grant Agreement was signed for the project “bridging missing links between fr & es: studies for rehabilitating the cross-border railway section pau–zaragoza”.

Main objective:

  • prepare the necessary design and authorization procedures for the execution of the works in both the Spanish and French railway sections;
  • The implementation of a series of horizontal activities aimed at developing a common organizational structure to improve international cooperation, as well as the development of appropriate financing models and operational structures.

  • Total cost: €14,710,000.
  • Financing agreed within the framework of the MCE (50%): 7,355,000 euros.

Connecting Europe Facility 2019

In the framework of the 2019 call of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the European Commission Grant Agreement was signed for the project “brinding missing links between fr&sp: cross-border railwaysection pau-zaragoza. somport railway tunnel reopening of the Somport railway tunnel”.

Main objective:

  • studies and activities necessary for the rehabilitation of the Somport railway tunnel, in order to allow the reopening of international traffic for passengers and goods;
  • financing of part of the works for the new railway yard on the international esplanade and the construction of the new passenger station in Canfranc.

  • Start/end date: 04/24/2019 – 12/31/2024.
  • Total cost: €8,600,000.
  • Financing agreed within the framework of the MCE: €2,746,000.
