About Us

The Fundación Transpirenaica was established in 2003 with the aim of promoting the development of a central railway crossing through the Pyrenees, via a low-altitude tunnel linking Spain and France through Aragon. This initiative seeks to provide a solution for cross-border freight transport between the Iberian Peninsula and the European continent. Over the years, its scope and objectives have expanded to foster territorial cooperation in Aragon—at cross-border, transnational, and interregional levels—guided by a vision of sustainable development. Its mission is clear: to promote infrastructure and strategic projects that strengthen economic, social, and territorial cohesion in Aragon.

This initiative by the Government of Aragon responds to the need to enhance transport connections and strategic infrastructure, promote cross-border cooperation, and support Aragon’s integration into the major European corridors. In doing so, it contributes to reducing territorial disparities, strengthening economic competitiveness, and improving citizens’ quality of life.

Today, its role remains essential in addressing, in a coordinated manner, the challenges and opportunities of the European context, representing and defending regional interests to ensure a sustainable, competitive, and well-integrated future for Aragon within the European framework.

Objectives

The Fundación Transpirenaica aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of all modes of transport in Aragon from a multimodal perspective.

Among its strategic priorities are not only rail transport infrastructures in different projects such as the reopening of the Zaragoza-Canfranc-Pau International Railway Line, the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor; in the Zaragoza-Teruel-Sagunto, Zaragoza-Pamplona “Basque Y” and Zaragoza-Barcelona sections, the Central Pyrenees Crossing project and the proximity train, but also in strategic regional roads, airports and logistics platforms.

All of this aligns with Aragon’s strong commitment to becoming a logistics-specialised region. Its excellent geostrategic position will enable the development of the sector’s significant potential as a strategic driver of other areas of the economy, supported by multimodality, infrastructure development, and improved cross-border connectivity.

In addition, the Fundación promotes cross-border cooperation and works closely with the Government of Aragon on European projects and strategic initiatives at the institutional level.
