It was inaugurated in <strong>1928<\/strong>, coinciding with the opening of the <strong>Canfranc International Station<\/strong>, conceived as a major railway interchange node between Spain and France. Its construction was a technical challenge of the first order, with unique works such as the <strong>Somport tunnel (7.8 km)<\/strong> and numerous viaducts and tunnels to overcome the orography of the central Pyrenees.  <\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;1.8em&#8221; text_orientation=&#8221;justified&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In 1970, a serious derailment on the French side caused the interruption of international traffic, leaving the line operational only in its Spanish section to Canfranc. In spite of this, the line maintained an important strategic and patrimonial value. <\/p>\n<p>Its transnational relevance was recognized in <strong>2013<\/strong>, when the European Commission incorporated the Zaragoza &#8211; Canfranc &#8211; Pau line into the <strong>Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)<\/strong>, within the priority projects for sustainable rail connection. A project that seeks the recovery of this historic railway space but also serves as a boost towards the reopening of the international line that crosses the Pyrenees to connect Zaragoza &#8211; Huesca &#8211; Canfranc &#8211; Pau. <\/p>\n<p>The full reopening of the international link is now a strategic project for <strong>territorial cohesion, cross-border transport and the transition to sustainable mobility within the framework of the European Union.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243;
