International Railway Line ZARAGOZA-CANFRANC-PAU<\/h1>\n

The Zaragoza – Canfranc – Pau<\/strong> international line is one of the most important trans-Pyrenean railway corridors in southwest Europe. It was inaugurated in 1928<\/strong>, coinciding with the opening of the Canfranc International Station<\/strong>, conceived as a major railway interchange node between Spain and France. Its construction was a technical challenge of the first order, with unique works such as the Somport tunnel (7.8 km)<\/strong> and numerous viaducts and tunnels to overcome the orography of the central Pyrenees. <\/p>\n

In 1970, a serious derailment on the French side caused the interruption of international traffic, leaving the line operational only in its Spanish section to Canfranc. In spite of this, the line maintained an important strategic and patrimonial value. <\/p>\n

Its transnational relevance was recognized in 2013<\/strong>, when the European Commission incorporated the Zaragoza – Canfranc – Pau line into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)<\/strong>, within the priority projects for sustainable rail connection. Since then, modernization, partial electrification and infrastructure improvement works have been promoted with the support of European funding<\/strong> through programs such as the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and Interreg POCTEFA. <\/p>\n

At the same time, the Canfranc International Station<\/strong> has undergone a thorough refurbishment and will reopen in 2021<\/strong> as a modernized railway terminal, compatible with European interoperability standards, and as a space for tourist and cultural use with a high heritage value.<\/p>\n

The project to reopen the Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza international line is based on cross-border cooperation between the neighboring countries, and on the shared desire of the Aquitaine region and the Autonomous Community of Aragon to help restore the continuity of rail traffic on the existing line, closed since 1970, due to the derailment of a freight train at the Estanguet bridge.<\/p>\n

In 2021, the new station of Canfranc and the new railway yard were inaugurated, included in the works promoted by the Government of Aragon for the recovery of the esplanade of Los Ara\u00f1ones where the international station of Canfranc is located. A project that seeks the recovery of this historic railway space but also serves as a boost towards the reopening of the international line that crosses the Pyrenees to connect Zaragoza – Huesca – Canfranc – Pau. <\/p>\n

The full reopening of the international link is now a strategic project for territorial cohesion, cross-border transport and the transition to sustainable mobility within the framework of the European Union.<\/strong><\/p>\n

European funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)<\/h2>\n
